NYC COUNCIL MEMBERS CALL FOR JUSTICE IN NOEL POLANCO CASE
Joint Statement by Council Members Melissa Mark-Viverito, Daniel Dromm, Charles Barron, Leroy Comrie, Julissa Ferreras, Rosie Mendez, Ydanis Rodriguez, Mark Weprin, and Jumaane Williams
“We support the call for a grand jury investigation into the October 4th shooting death of Noel Polanco, the 22-year- old National Guardsman who was shot and killed in his car by NYPD detective Hassan Hamdy during a traffic stop along Grand Central Parkway in Queens.
“We have deep concerns about this case, given the facts that have come to light so far. Police said that Polanco was speeding near La Guardia airport around 5:00 a.m. when officers pulled him over. As two officers approached the car, one of them (Hamdy) claims he saw Polanco reaching for something, and he then shot him once in the stomach. The other passenger in the car said this account was untrue — that Polanco’s hands were on the steering wheel. No weapons were recovered from the car.
“Our support and prayers go out to Polanco’s family. We fully support his mother’s call for an independent grand jury investigation. It is important that the NYPD officer be held accountable and prosecuted if the investigation determines that he committed a crime. Given the other recent fatal shootings of unarmed New Yorkers by police officers, it is essential to make sure that justice is served in this case. We are currently reaching out to the family to see in what way we can be supportive.”
