Melissa Urges Randall’s Island Sports Foundation and Sportime to Reach Out to Community

Tomorrow, the Franchise Concession Review Committee will vote to allow the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation (RISF) to enter into initial negotiations with Sportime about expanding their tennis facility on the island. Melissa did not object to the vote, but called upon both the Randall’s Island Sports Foundation and Sportime to fully engage the surrounding communities of El Barrio/East Harlem and the South Bronx in a meaningful way as they go through the ULURP review process.

RISF and Sportime both have a long way to go in building a rapport with the residents of my district, by demonstrating that they are truly willing to be responsive to our concerns and proactively engage with us. The surrounding Community Boards, concerned stakeholders and my office must get answers to any additional questions we raise in order to fully assess whether this expansion meets the needs of our neighborhoods. We also need to be able to see that all commitments Sportime is making to the community are being met on a consistent basis.

  1. This continued privatization of our public park should be stopped outright. Why just call for more community input, which they ignore anyway? Oppose it, you represent the public, not private tennis club goers that pay thousands, thousands of dollars to occupy our space. PLus it is $200 for a regular tennis permit to play on regular courts! Finally, there is not a single basketball court on the Island, despite that being a rather popular and common sport in the adjacent communities. Stand up to this!
