Council Members Respond to S.I. BP Molinaro’s Comments on Mexican President Felipe Calderón

Last week, Melissa and four other Council Members sent a letter to Staten Island Borough President James V. Molinaro following comments he made regarding the recent visit of Mexican President Felipe Calderón to the U.S. Congress. The Borough President referred to President Calderón as a “despotic idiot” and to Mexico as a “banana republic,” in response to his address before Congress, where he criticized Arizona’s new immigration law.

The letter, which was also signed by Council Members Dromm, Ferreras, Rodriguez and Williams, can be viewed below:

  1. Though I am not supportive of the policies of the President of Mexico, I take serious exception to the disrespectful and ignorant statements of Mr. Molinaro (Grinder), the Borough President of Staten Island. A son of immigrants and representative of all the people of richmond County is fanning the flames of racism and anti-immigrant sentiment…what a poor example of leadership, compassion and humanity!

I am looking forward to you being joined by many of your other colleagues on the Council. .
