Melissa, the Speaker and Others Announce Special Trip to Puerto Rico at Last Night’s Fundraiser for Jorge Steven’s Family

Last night, Melissa attended a fundraiser, which was held for the family of Jorge Steven López Mercado, the victim of a brutal hate crime in Puerto Rico. Thanks to everyone who joined us at this event!

A number of community leaders came to show their support of the López Mercado family and to speak out against hate. Melissa was joined by her colleagues, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Council Members Rosie Mendez, Danny Dromm and Jimmy Van Bramer, all four of which are themselves members of the LGBT community.

Speaker Quinn, Melissa and the other Council Members announced that they will be making a special trip to Puerto Rico next week to meet with the López Mercado family as well as Puerto Rican LGBT activists and other influential leaders.

Details are forthcoming. Please stay tuned to our blog for further updates.

Here is a photo homage shown at last night’s event, which includes a number of photos from the November 22nd NYC vigil for Jorge Steven.
