On Tuesday, Melissa participated in three important holiday events in El Barrio/East Harlem.
First, the Holiday Housing March drew an energetic crowd, demanding that the City take action to build and preserve affordable housing. The march was organized by the Anti-Displacement Taskforce, which is coordinated by Melissa’s office. Thanks to all of the local residents and community groups who joined us at the march, as well as to the Harlem Drummers, Steppers & Flag Team who helped liven up our chants.
Following the march, Melissa joined local community members at the 6th Annual East Harlem Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn also made an appearance at the ceremony. We hope you will go visit the beautiful tree at 106th Street & 3rd Avenue.
Finally, Melissa boarded one of the East Harlem Taste Trolleys to visit local restaurants throughout El Barrio/East Harlem. Trolley riders were fortunate enough to have live music played as they were taken from one great establishment to the next.
We hope these events served to not only unite the El Barrio/East Harlem community during this Holiday Season, but also to raise awareness of the importance of affordable housing and of supporting
our local small businesses.
